What did the Mayans do for us?

This term our learning is based around historical enquiries of the Mayans. There is much fascination about the Mayans including how they were able to build, develop, and sustain a great civilization in the middle of the rainforest. In this topic, we will explore how they managed this and much more besides…

Our DT project, where we will be learning about South American food. We will look at traditional South American ingredients, tasting and evaluating the flavours and nutritious values of these foods before designing and cooking our own Maya Corn Torillas. Yum!

In Science, we will be supporting this learning by exploring how to keep our bodies healthy. We will learn all about nutrition, the importance of exercise, their hearts and more. They will investigate how water and nutrients are transported in the circulatory system and recognise the impact of diet, exercise, drugs, and lifestyle on how their bodies function.

In English, our learning journey text this half term is ‘Pig Heart Boy’ by Malorie Blackman. A fantastic story about Cameron a 13-year-old in need of a heart transplant. Unfortunately, a donor cannot be found until a surgeon approaches Cam with a proposal. He can give Cameron a new heart… from a pig. The children will be exploring the ethical and moral issues surrounding this controversial procedure through a balanced argument and will producing spectacular newspaper report.
