Brilliant Biomes

This term, Merlin have lots of exciting and interesting subjects to study.

Here are some highlights of what we will be learning …

This term, in geography, the children will learn about the biomes and ecosystems in the UK. They will complete a case study of the New Forest, discovering the diversity of trees, plants and animals found there. They will plan fieldwork to be conducted in a local woodland ecosystem, investigating the amount and variety of trees, plants and animals. They will then conduct this fieldwork at a local woodland ecosystem, observing, measuring and recording their findings. Children will finally analyse the data collected.

In English, this term we will be using the text Kensuke’s Kingdom to inspire the children.  We will be having a poetry and narrative focus.  This is a lovely book about a young boy who is washed up on an Island and meets Kensuke who has been on the island for over 40 years.  Our grammar focus will be speech and parenthesis. We will be continuing to improve our writing by using different literary techniques and high-level grammar.

In maths, we are going to be working on multiplying at 4 digit number by a 1 digit number initially up to a 4 digit by a 2 digit number.  We will also be practising our division skills by dividing a 4 digit number by a 1 digit number.  After this we will move on to the second part of our fractions work.  We will be looking at multiplying fractions.

In science, this term, the children will learn the seven life processes that distinguish living from non-living things. They will consolidate and extend previous learning on the life cycles of plants and animals, comparing and describing differences in the life cycles of mammals, amphibians, reptiles, birds and insects. They will learn how animals and plants reproduce; comparing differences and similarities between five different animal groups.

In our PE lessons, we will be focussing on swimming and netball this term.  In netball, we will be passing, defending and playing many mini games to practise our developing skills.
