Mathematics

At RAF Benson Community Primary School, we believe that every child is entitled to a high quality mathematics education, which will provide a foundation for them to understand the world. As a result, our pupils will have an appreciation of the beauty and power of mathematics, and a sense of enjoyment and curiosity about the subject.

Our school follows the White Rose scheme of learning, which enables all children to:

Become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, so that they:

  • have a well-developed sense of number values
  • know by heart key number facts, e.g. times-tables, related division facts and number bonds
  • apply knowledge of the above to work out connected facts

Reason mathematically, so that they:

  • are able to follow a line of enquiry
  • provide generalisations and proof of findings around their investigations
  • are able to justify their thinking, e.g. the reasons why a particular calculation strategy is the most efficient

Solve problems by applying their understanding of mathematics, so that they:

  • encounter a variety of both routine and non-routine problems
  • are able to select specific mathematics skills and/or operations
  • persevere with a line of enquiry, breaking down increasingly complex problems into a series of smaller steps

Our Calculation Policy has been developed to work alongside the White Rose scheme of learning, supporting the models and images used to scaffold children's learning. This document is regularly reviewed by staff to ensure that the concrete, pictorial and abstract representations outlined in the policy are the most effective to support the learning of our children.

Our Calculation Policy can be viewed here:

Alongside White Rose we use other resources to engage and enthuse children in their maths learning, including Mathletics and Times Table Rockstars. Links to online learning platforms that we have subscribed to can be found in the 'Learning Zone' area of our website.

Other free online resources that children may find enjoyable can be accessed via the links below:

We understand that approaches to teaching maths over the years have changed, and therefore maths can be a difficult subject to know where to start with. In order to help parents support their children with the learning they have been doing at school, we have created some calculation leaflets. Each leaflet outlines the methods, models and images used to teach each of the four operations (adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing) in each year group, showing how the strategies develop throughout the school. We have also created a document with printable resources that you can use at home to support their learning.
