Spectacular Space

This term, Merlin have lots of exciting and interesting subjects to study.

Here are some highlights of what we will be learning …

This term, in geography, we are going to be studying the northern and southern hemisphere and the equator.  We will also be looking at how lines of longitude and latitude help us in our work. We will learn about the 8 points on a compass, 6 figure grid references and how OS maps help us. We will also study the distribution of natural resources – energy, food, minerals and water.  We will be undertaking a field trip at RAF Benson utilising our new skills of map reading.

In English, we will be using the text the Nowhere Emporium written by Ross MacKenzie and illustrated by Manuel Sumberac.  We will be using this text to support our narrative writing.  Our grammar focus will be describing settings, characters and atmosphere and integrating dialogue to convey character and advance the action.

In maths, we are going to be learning about position and direction including reading and plotting co-ordinates, translation, lines of symmetry and reflection.  We will also be studying decimals including using the four operations of adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing.

In science, this term, children will learn about space. We will be learning about the movement of the Earth and other planets relative to the sun in the solar system and the movement of the moon relative to the Earth.  We will also learn about the sun, Earth and moon as approximately spherical bodies.  Finally, we will learning about the Earth’s rotation to explain day and night and the apparent movement of the sun across the sky.  We will be comparing and order planets considering how long it takes for the planets to orbit around the sun in days and years.

In our PE lessons, we will be focussing on swimming and rounders. The focus will be on skills development to build up towards enjoying games of rounders.
