Summer 2 - Incredible Inventions

Incredible Inventions!

This term we are being led and inspired by history, focusing on scientists and engineers that have changed our lives and the work of others, through their clever inventions such as Dr Maggie Aderin-Pocock, Thomas Edison, William Caxton and Joseph Nicéphore Niépce.

We continue the inventor theme in English, being inspired by fiction-style books about real inventions and inventors, including “Mr Ferris and his wheel”, by Kathryn Gibbs Davis and “The Crayon Man” by Edward Binney. We will be following in the footsteps of Mr Ferris, making a proposal for our own new exhibition at the World Fair, thereby bringing together our work in English and computing (presenting ideas). We hope to convince you to back our idea at our Open Classroom!

In science, we will research scientists that have discovered new materials such as John Dunlop, Charles Macintosh, John McAdam and Kiara Nirghin, before continuing to develop our working scientifically skills, by designing and completing practical investigations.

Meanwhile, in design and technology, we will become inventors ourselves, using our problem solving skills to design a new camera to match our specification, including sliders to manage the light exposure; and a catapult using levers to accurately aim at a target, using our coordination skills developed in PE throughout this year. We may need some clean junk modelling again for this - please save your (small-medium) boxes. Tea boxes are perfect, as they are a good size and easy to cut.

In the penultimate week, on Friday 12th July, we will be inviting Year 2 parents and guardians to our open classroom, to share our work from this term - in particular, to present our fantastic proposals for a new exhibition at the World Fair to you, and our innovative new cameras! We can’t wait to see you there!

Camo Day and School Fair

The children were totally awesome and had a wonderful time at Camo Day. When asked about their favourite stand, most were named!
