Term 2: Wild Weather

Griffin have had an amazing first term. The children are developing their independence and showing that they are curious, responsible and resilient learners.

Our topic this term is geography and science-led. We will become geographers, tracking and measuring the weather, whilst using our DT skills to build a weather station, including a windsock, and our data science skills to record our observations. We will write instructions to make our wind sock. We will also create stories inspired by the leaf fall we see around us, and our own personal experiences and imagination.

Within science and geography, we will think about the bigger picture of alternate climates, looking in particular at the continent of Antarctica. We will also begin to consider climate change, and how we might harness some of the weather we experience, such as for generating alternative energy sources through wind and solar power.

We will develop our knowledge of colour by exploring shades and tones through landscapes, taking our inspiration from artists such as Vincent Van Gogh.

And this wouldn't the term building up to Christmas without practising narratives and songs for our Nativity play, along with getting creative with our art skills to produce some Christmas wonders.

What a great term we will have!

Amazing Dogs in Action!

Year 1 had an exciting trip across the base this week. The children were very excited to be collected in a coach from school and travel over to the Police Dog Unit. The children were able to look around the kennels; go behind the scenes to the rooms where they are weighed, washed and fed; and to explore some of the training kit used by the team. They then got back on the coach to watch a close-up display of the dogs in action, apprehending an intruder and keeping their handler safe whilst a search was carried out. The children were great ambassadors for the school, with excellent behaviour and thoughtful questions. Well done Griffin!
