Merlin - Year 5

Welcome to Merlin Class!

Teacher : Mrs Scott

Teaching Assistants : Mrs Whitty and Miss Taylor

We have an exciting year ahead of us in Merlin Class, with fabulous topics planned to inspire your child’s learning. Updates on our work and activities will be posted here to share at home.

Please keep an eye on our class page throughout the year for updates about what we have been up to each term.

More Information:

Reading: Reading at home helps to develop a love of books and reading, whilst increasing your child’s vocabulary confidence. We recommend reading at home, to or with, your child for at least 10 minutes every day. Their Reading Record should be used to reflect the reading you are doing, to help us support your child’s reading and exposure to different genres and subjects whilst in class. Please ensure your child’s Reading Record comes to school every day.

Drink and Snack: Your child should have a water bottle in school every day. Could you also please supply a healthy snack to have at breaktime if you think your child would like one.  This could be a small yoghurt, a piece of fruit or some cheese.

PE Kits: Please send your child’s full PE kit to school on Monday and it will be sent home on a Friday. Having access to kit throughout the week enables us to accommodate any necessary timetable changes and gives us access to a spare change of clothing which may help your child to be more comfortable through the day, for example if clothes or shoes become wet at playtime. Spare pants, socks and/or tights can also be useful for this. Please check regularly that PE kit is named.  Please also ensure that your child has their swimming bag with costume, towel and a swimming hat ready for our swimming lessons on Wednesdays.  Our swim teacher has requested that all children have goggles (please write a permission note for goggles).

Spellings: As well as learning different spelling rules, we will be learning the Year 5&6 Common Exception words.  When your child is tested each term the word will be highlighted in the reading records.  Please spend some time at home practicing the words your child is learning.

Times tables: Would you please encourage your child to use Timestable Rockstars at home to help them learn/retain their tables knowledge.

The Year 5 team are very excited to meet you all and to get started on our learning journey together. We really value the chance to work in partnership with you sharing your thoughts, celebrations and concerns. If it more than a quick question at school drop-off or collection, please send an email or arrange an appointment through the School Office. If there is an issue that we need to discuss further, the teacher will phone after 3:30pm on the same day wherever possible, using the contact number left with the Office.
