Primary PE and Sport Premium Funding

In April 2013, the Government announced that it will be providing additional funding of £150 million per annum to improve provision of physical education (PE) and sport in primary schools. This funding is provided jointly by the Departments for Education, Health and Culture, Media and Sport and will be allocated directly to primary school head teachers to spend on improving the quality of sport and PE for all their children.

Every state-maintained school, academy, middle school, special school and pupil referral unit with primary aged pupils will receive £16,000 plus a ‘top up’ of £10 per pupil.

Purpose of funding

The sport premium funding has been ring-fenced and can only be spent on sport, PE and Healthy Lifestyles provision in schools, although schools have the freedom to choose how best to do this. Schools are held accountable for how they spend their funding and are required to publish on-line information about how they have used the additional funding. OFSTED will play a significant role in ensuring that schools target this funding in areas, which will lead to clear outcomes in raising standards and opportunities in PE, and school sport for all children throughout the Primary Phase.

How we will be spending the PE and Sport Premium Funding in 2026 - 2027 dependent on funding received (main areas):

• Subscribe to Jigsaw, Youth Sport Trust, AFPE and Swim England to gain access to resources and materials to support the development of Sport and PE in school ensuring that staff skill in PE and sports and the teaching of well-being remains strong
• Continuing with Forest School so that we build confidence and resilience to be successful in all areas of life and to re-establish team building skills within an outdoor context.
• Continue to update the outdoor equipment that children have access to at playtime in addition to the play pod ensuring that we continue to provide 30 minutes of active play each day
• Increase the variety of sporting after school clubs and use experts within the community, where possible
• Continue links with schools in the locality for inter-school competitive sporting events
• Subsidise transport costs to and from sporting events, including weekly swimming, ensuring that children are exposed to and participate in competitive events
• Continue to replace old equipment with new high-quality kit ensuring that children have the best sporting facilities we can offer
• CPD for staff to access to ensure that knowledge and skills are high
• To inspire children to lead fit and active lives using known role models
